UV sterilizers are used in aquariums to control infections and free-floating algae. The UV Light Sterilizes the microorganisms that can spread throughout the tank and helps to control the spread and growth of harmful bacteria.
UV sterilizers feature a germicidal fluorescent lamp designed to irradiate the water, Killing and Sterilizing harmful bacteria as it drifts by. They can be particularly useful in multiple tank systems that use a common filter or tanks that hold a lot of live rock and coral where isolating infections can be difficult.
UV sterilizers work best in conjunction with a good mechanical and biological filtration system.
WILL A STERILIZER KILL OFF BENEFICIAL BACTERIA?
The Short answer is no, the long answer is Yes, in some instances. Beneficial bacteria lives within substrate, rocks, decor and media in your filter. This means it is not free-floating and unlikely to come into contact with the UV Sterilizer. In cases where Beneficial Bacteria does make its way through the Sterilizer it will likely be killed off. This is unlikely to be to an extent that will have an affect on your system.
PENTAIR SMART UV STERILIZER
The Pentair Smart UV is a quality UV steriliser used in aquaculture and is now gaining popularity with aquarium hobbyists worldwide.
SYSTEM FEATURES:
- Easy-to-remove UV lamp and quartz sleeve assembly allows for lamp removal without disrupting the water flow. This design also allows for removal of the entire power assembly for easy interior cleaning.
- Remote power supply positions the power supply away from the UV vessel and water, increasing overall safety.
- Ballasts are available with standard-output sterilisers (18-watt through 130-watt models). LPHO multi-voltage (100-277 VAC) ballasts are available with high-output sterilisers (50-watt through 120-watt models). They both deliver the precise electrical requirements to the lamp, maximising UV-C output and lamp life. Models using 150 watt lamps can be ordered in 120 or 230 VAC 50/60Hz. All ballasts are sealed to prevent water damage. Cord length: 19.5 ft.
- All Smart UV Sterilisers are watertight and designed for operation in wet environments.
- Smart UV Sterilisers feature a heavy-wall UV-resistant plastic vessel (UV Vessel Lifetime Limited Warranty).
- Clear viewing ports are positioned on both ends of each UV vessel for safe internal inspection during use.

A rotary drum filter or (RDF) for short, is a sediment filter. The CONGRUI line of RDFs can filter out any solids down to 70 microns in size.
Water is pumped through the units rotating filter screen (hence the name "rotating drum filter" ) trapping particles along the way. Water is then pumped through additional filtration such as a sump or canister filter.
The CONGRUI (pronounced: kong-grew) line of RDFs carried by aqua express come standard with a 3 year full replacement warranty.
